At last, after four weeks, 64 games and 159 goals, we have finally reached the 2023 Women’s World Cup Final. Now, Spain and England square off in an epic showdown that will see one European nation bringing the cup home for the first time. In this post, we’ll be providing our Women’s World Cup bets, including our Spain-England picks, prediction and latest odds.
There are a lot of “firsts” in this clash. It is also the first meeting between England and Spain at the Women’s World Cup, and the first time either side have been in the final. Moreover, while England has reached the final four in the last two tournaments, this is Spain’s first time advancing past the Round of 16, which is quite remarkable.
Overall, it has been an incredible run of games for La Roja. Since their 4-0 drubbing at the hands of an exciting Japan team, they have rattled off three knockout wins against Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden. While the margins were narrow and late goals were needed, they have passed every test so far. On the other hand, England has been faced their own challenges; the biggest of which was losing Lauren James for two matches after her controversial stamp against Nigeria. Nonetheless, Sarina Wiegman’s side battled through with a comeback win against Colombia and confident victory over the hosts, Australia. Breaking Down the Spain-England Odds
Spain are the narrow moneyline favorites here, which I simply do not agree with. In their last thirteen meetings, England are 7-4-2 against Spain, going 3-1-1 over their last five. Furthermore, it cannot be said enough that the Lionesses have been here before. They have almost reached the World Cup Final twice, and they did see victory in the Women’s Euros, which is an equally difficult tournament. With almost every cup in football, across all competitions, you cannot just ascend the mountain on one go. You have to fail first and it feels like this is Spain’s moment to fail, especially with the youngest squad since Germany and Norway in 1995.
Plus, England are getting Lauren James back, which feels like an added bonus to their squad having already won two games without her. Nonetheless, England’s odds to win in regular time sit at +185, while their odds to lift the cup sit at -110. Keep in mind that three of the last six Women’s World Cup Finals did use extra time or penalties to decide a winner.
Spain-England Picks & Prediction: The Over/Under
On the goal front, this match is expected to stay tame which is probably large in part to England’s defense. While they have conceded in two straight, they have only let in three goals across the entire tournament, on an xGA of 5.2. In goal, Mary Earps has been solid for England, keeping a post-shot expected goals minus goals allowed +/- of +0.5. She has been aided by a rock solid back line featuring the likes of Alex Greenwood, Millie Bright and Jess Carter. While Spain is the highest scoring team Down Under, they have not faced a team with dangerous threats on both ends, like England.
Spain will come out and play possession-style football, with midfielders like Teresa Abelleira, Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmati. As we have seen with their men’s teams in the past, sometimes that plays into their opponents hands as there is a lack of end product. You can get away with it against the Netherlands and Sweden because their attacks are not as good. Eventually, England will score and the match will turn to how Spain reacts. With all of that said, there is no value betting the under here, so I would stay away from it. In World Cup Final history, the over/under and both teams to score has split 50% of the time, making it too risky.
Spain-England Prediction
As I said before, I favor England and will take a ride on them to lift the cup at -110, which is a great price for a team that is still unbeaten. On top of that, I will also take England to score over 1.5 team goals, which offers a crazy price of +210. They have scored two goals in three of their last four matches and will be reenergized by James joining the starting eleven.
Final Spain-England Prediction: England to lift the cup (-110, DraftKings)
England 01.5 goals (+210, DraftKings)
