Women’s World Cup: Netherlands-Portugal Prediction & France-Jamaica Predictions

The 2023 Women’s World Cup rolls on early Sunday morning with three kickoffs at 1:00, 3:30 and 6:00 a.m. ET. Sunday is an exciting day because Sweden, the Netherlands and France all start their World Cup campaigns. Let’s jump right into the best Women’s World Cup bets with our Netherlands-Portugal predictions as well as our  France-Jamaica prediction.

Respectively, these countries have +1800, +2200 and +1000 odds to win the entire tournament, meaning there will be a ton of talent on display. Furthermore, the teams they are playing (South Africa, Portugal and Jamaica) have only two combined appearances at the Women’s World Cup, with no victories. With that being said, you can probably expect a couple of lopsided results and possibly even a major upset should one of the European giants take a misstep.

Netherlands-Portugal Prediction

The first match we want to highlight on Sunday’s slate features the Netherlands, who were finalists just four years ago in France. It was a miraculous knockout run that saw Oranje Leeuwinnen take down the likes of Japan, Italy and Sweden all on the way to the final. Now, they enter their third Women’s World Cup, with the swagger of having already arrived.

Nonetheless, they will feel the slight pressure of having the United States in their group, the same team who beat them in 2019. Basically, this means they cannot afford a slip up against either Portugal or Vietnam. Luckily, they have a great head-to-head record against their European opponents. In fact, they have won seven out of eight against Portugal, including a group stage match at the 2022 Euros, which finished 3-2.

The Netherlands are coming into this match without Vivianne Miedema, who is a pivotal piece and goalscorer for this Dutch side. Her absence might be felt greater in the later stages of the tournament, when more difficult defenses arise. It is worth noting, they had no problem putting five goals past 19th ranked Belgium in a warmup to this World Cup.

I am going to let history do the thinking for me and side with the Netherlands here, but in a shootout. From a betting angle, I like favoring both teams to score, as Portugal have bagged a goal in eight of their last nine contests. There is not much value in betting on the Netherlands to win, without playing a multi-goal spread, which I do not think will happen.

Final Netherlands-Portugal Prediction: Both teams to score (-120, DraftKings)

France-Jamaica Prediction

At #43 in the FIFA Women’s Rankings, Jamaica are the seventh lowest ranked team in the entire field. Conversely, France hold the #5 slot, meaning there is a bigger gap than USA-Vietnam which featured some extraordinary moneylines and goal totals. It is not that the FIFA Rankings really matter all that much, but instead the fact that these sides really are miles apart in terms of quality.

Jamaica’s first Women’s World Cup appearance in 2019 did not go swimmingly either. They lost all three matches, conceded 12 goals and only scored once in what was an incredibly hard group with the likes of Brazil, Italy and Australia. Sadly, their first group stage match in 2023 will not be easier.

Since France’s Euro semifinal loss to Germany, they are 7-1-1 under seasoned manager, Herve Renard. Moreover, they are still led by star captain Wendie Renard and all-time leading goal-scorer Eugenie Le Sommer. They have experience in this tournament and be able to easily roll past Jamaica.

With that being said, Jamaica do have a proper star on their team in Khadija Shaw. She scored 20 goals for Manchester City this season in the WSL and has +400 odds to score against France. I would ride with a half-unit play on her to score, along with France -3.5 at -130.

Final France-Jamaica Prediction: Khadija Shaw to score (+400, DraftKings)

France -3.5 (-130, DraftKings)
