It’s time to begin our best WNBA bet series by looking at our Liberty-Mystics pick, prediction and an interesting Brittney Sykes play too good to ignore.
The WNBA season is finally upon us! In the very first game of the season, the New York Liberty travel to Washington D.C. to take on the Mystics, the same team that played spoiler to them when they were a shiny, brand new super team on opening day 2023.
The Mystics, however, are a fair deal more strapped coming into this season roster-wise. It’s a bit difficult for me to see them upsetting the Liberty on day 1 a second year in a row. Washington lost Natasha Cloud in free agency to the Phoenix Mercury, while Elena Delle Donne is taking the full season off from basketball.
Liberty-Mystics Pick, Prediction & Best WNBA Bet Today
The Mystics were similarly shorthanded for parts of last season, when they got hit with the injury bug real bad, missing a good chunk of their roster for much of July and August. During this stretch, Brittney Sykes stepped up in a major way, averaging 20.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.3 assists between July 7th and August 18th.
Sykes has shown she’s capable of being the fulcrum of this Mystics offense, a responsibility that will fall to her this season perhaps even more than it did last season given the departure of her backcourt mate in Cloud. Sykes has that dog in her, and everyone is counting the Mystics out this season. She’s going to put this team on her back to steal as many teams as they can.
In this match-up against the Liberty, I like Brittney Sykes to take advantage of New York’s weak backcourt defense and generate a ton of offense. I’m taking her points over at 15.5 and sprinkling her to lead the game in scoring, available at +750 on FanDuel. FanDuel hasn’t hung a combo stats line for Sykes yet, but if they do, I’ll be adding a position on her PRA line as well.
