A shorter slate for the WNBA does not mean we are without action. There are a couple of spots making their push for the Play of the Day, but this is a special place reserved for the utmost highest-value play. We also do not want to force anything and mess up the nice run of hits from the past few nights. Both totals seemed already on the move, which leaves us to choose from one of two sides for our WNBA bets. Let’s get greedy and head to the nation’s capital — we should fit right in.

WNBA Best Bets: Mercury Are Bad, But Not This Bad
Phoenix Mercury vs. Washington Mystics (-11.5)
It was always the Mercury. Both teams were destroyed last time out, but it is actually Washington that comes off the more humiliating loss: A 21-point drubbing by the Fever (Yes, we had Indiana on the spread). What jumps out even more than the loss was how bad their defense played. Do not expect the Mercury to put up 87 points on the league’s best defense, but that does not mean the Mystics are a lock. See, a team has to score too, not just play defense all game. This has the makings of an under slam, but the reality is Washington will have a tougher time pulling away than keeping this game under the total.

The Mercury are not exactly exuding confidence following an 83-69 smashing at the hands of the Storm — still tied for the worst record in the league. Phoenix can join Seattle at the bottom with another loss tonight, which is the more probable result. But this is the fine line in the WNBA where stars will still see action later in games, even down 10 to 15 points. The real reason people will stay away from this line is the Brittney Griner injury for Phoenix. That is a perfect opportunity to buy low on a team that is already bad with her on the floor. Not having one of the league’s better players will certainly have an impact, but the Mercury have three guards averaging double figures. We are betting on the Mercury knocking down outside shots against an opponent who might go on multiple scoreless stretches. Both Sophie Cunningham and Sug Sutton are shooting over 30% from 3 and should have increased volume tonight. If Diana Taurasi gets four makes from deep, then this is a lock.
