THUD! Nothing says bounce back like some offense, and tonight we are looking at the Mercury and Wings in Dallas. These are two teams that should get up and down the floor while converting possessions into buckets. No lead is safe, as was the case last night in Seattle, so tonight’s focus will be on both sides doing what they do best — scoring. WNBA Best Bet of the Day: Great Offense, Bad Defense Galore
It has been one heck of a struggle out of the gate for the Mercury. Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi are simply not enough for a team that is getting killed defensively nearly every night. Even pushing the Sparks to overtime was not enough, as they eventually fell for the fourth time in five games. Phoenix does not seem to have much trouble scoring; it is just the other side of the court that is its undoing. Griner led five players in double figures as the Mercury continue to push the rest of the WNBA, hovering around a top-5 scoring offense. Unfortunately, the Mercury are getting worked on defense. Granted, three of their four losses have come against Los Angeles, but Phoenix gave up 90-plus in each of those. Its opponent tonight will be much closer to the Sparks in scoring and pacing than in either of the Mercury’s other two games. Even while putting up so many points on the board, Phoenix still finds itself with a rather bad 6.5-point differential on the season.

Dallas is just a better version of Phoenix, at least defensively. Satou Sabally leads the way for the Wings as their leading scorer and rebounder. Dallas is top heavy, with the majority of their scoring coming from three players. Both Sabally and Arike Ogunbowale average over 20 points per game, with Natasha Howard also adding 17 per contest. This has frontcourt battle written all over it, with the two teams’ top scorers going head-to-head much of the night. Since there is so much emphasis on starter minutes, especially earlier in the season, this should help fuel plenty of offense throughout the night — especially with four to five gifted scorers on the court at any time.
The Wings are just barely scoring more points than they give up each night, and the Mercury are below water in this category. Neither team has truly figured out a defensive identity, and Dallas has simply willed some more buckets to finish ahead of half of its opponents — sitting at 3-3 but losers of two straight. Both of these teams tonight get a break in facing a looser defense. Be it Sabally or Griner, someone is dropping it heavy tonight — which means a strong play to the over!
